No, Stanford is not an Ivy League school. The Ivy League is an athletic conference of exactly eight universities in the Northeast: Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Yale. Stanford plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Duke, MIT, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins and many other highly selective schools aren't Ivies either.
Why isn't Stanford in the Ivy League?
Because the Ivy League is a group of eight older colleges in the Northeast that formed an athletic league, and Stanford grew up on the other side of the country. The eight schools signed the Ivy Group Agreement in 1945 and began formal league play in 1954. Stanford, founded in California in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford and opened in 1891, spent its athletic history in West Coast conferences, most recently the Pac-12, before joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2024.
The confusion is understandable. Stanford admitted 3.6% of applicants for fall 2024, about as selective as the most selective Ivies, and researchers sometimes group it with them. Economists Raj Chetty, David Deming and John Friedman, for example, study "Ivy-Plus" colleges: the eight Ivies plus Stanford, MIT, Duke and the University of Chicago (see what their research found). But "Ivy-Plus" is a research grouping, not a league. For more about the university itself, see our Stanford page.
Why so many people ask
"Ivy League" gets used loosely to mean "very hard to get into." But it's a sports conference, not a quality label or a ranking. Plenty of schools outside it are just as selective, and some Ivies differ from each other more than they differ from schools outside the league.

Does it matter whether a school is an Ivy?
For your college list, not much. What matters is whether a school fits you: its size, setting, how structured its classes are, and what it costs your family. Stanford and Dartmouth are both highly selective, but one is a 7,500-student university in Silicon Valley and the other a 4,500-student college in a small New Hampshire town. Those differences shape your four years far more than a conference name.
